Ten original drawings will be on exhibit.

Join us as we celebrate the life of Virginia McClure and launch her final artistic project – a monograph featuring over 50 of her last drawings. They constitute a unique body of work, a fantastical exploration of animistic imagery, childhood memory, a bacchanalian world pulsating with wonder, charm, joy, sometimes edge and threat. A rich unexpected gift from an extraordinary woman.

Virginia McClure’s legacies to the Visual Arts Centre have been many. She was, over almost six decades, a teacher, student, director, member of the board and its oft-times president.  At certain critical periods, she was responsible, almost singlehandedly, for the Centre’s survival, not solely as benefactor but equally through her wisdom, common sense and personal understanding of what it means to be an artist.  In recognition of her generous support, the gallery was renamed in her honour in 1992.

Virginia McClure was a prolific artist during her lifetime, working in many different media from ceramics, plastics and multimedia installations to printmaking, painting and drawing. She gained a reputation for her expressive, original and often witty ceramic sculpture, receiving several awards and participating in ceramic exhibitions throughout Canada; her work can be found in both private and public collections. She has published two poetry books and, most recently, The Yellow Painting, a memoir (2009).

The Visual Arts Centre is sad to announce the passing of Virginia McClure on Thursday, April 5th, 2012. A talented artist and poet in her own right, Virginia has been the most pivotal figure in the Visual Arts Centre’s history. She was an early founder of the Centre, our steadfast inspiration, mentor, and benefactor who will be sorely missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her and working with her. The funeral service will be held on April 13 at 2 pm at Westmount Park Church, 4695 de Maisonneuve west, Westmount.

Eric Fischl, a prominent American artist and founder of the ‘America: Now and Here’ project, has produced a poetry broadside in support of the nonprofit Montreal International Poetry Prize.

Fischl, a painter and sculptor whose works include the controversial Tumbling Woman, selected a poem for the broadside from the 2011 Global Poetry Anthology recently published by Montreal’s Véhicule Press. Fischl’s selection, “The Grasshoppers’ Silence” by Canadian poet Linda Rogers, is inspired by the true story of Rumana Monzur, who was tragically blinded in an attack by her husband in Bangladesh in June 2011. “I’ve chosen this poem because the image of the one-legged grasshopper won’t let me sleep,” said Fischl of his selection.

The first opportunity to view and purchase the broadside will be a launch held at the McClure Gallery, Visual Arts Center (350 Victoria Ave., in Westmount) on April 27 between 5-7pm. Linda Rogers, the former poet laureate of Victoria, B.C., will be in attendance to sign the broadsides and read her poem.
