The Visual Arts Centre believes that creative expression is a source of vitality and renewal crucial to contemporary living. We provide a learning environment where individuals of all ages and levels can develop as fully as possible their skill, expertise and expressiveness in a chosen medium.
We believe that the arts contribute significantly to the quality of life in our communities and seek to foster alliances that can help bring the visual arts more fully into the centre of our lives.
The Centre’s School of Art provides excellent and accessible art instruction. Admission to introductory courses is based on the interests of the student; no formal education is required. Our small classes, taught by professional artists, offer much individual attention to each student. Classes are bilingual and are designed for professionals, amateurs, or students wishing to develop a portfolio.
The Centre’s School of Art balances the teaching of technical skill with personal creativity through three distinct departments. Our Fine and Applied Arts Department offers over 70 courses a semester in a wide variety of art disciplines. In ceramics, both sculpture and pottery are taught in our well-equipped studios. Our Youth and Teen Department offers year round classes including a fine arts summer camp. For those 60 and over, our Mature Students Section offers a 20% discount. Workshops by visiting artists and the Centre’s own faculty enhance the programme throughout the year.
TThe Centre’s McClure Gallery also offers a dynamic selection of monthly exhibitions by local and international contemporary artists as well as accompanying artists’ talks.
Note: The VAC is guided by a Code of Ethics and an Anti-harassment policy both of which are available upon request.
Welcome to the Visual Arts Centre’s fall-winter season. We’re excited about our new slate of offerings this year which, besides continuing with the core curriculum, also introduces new approaches to creativity, expressive drawing and painting for our returning students. For instance, Print Studio Explorations - with Maria Chronopoulos includes monotype, linoblock, and drypoint printing. Also new is a course with Julie Keller, Introduction to Contemporary “Intermedia” Art, which combines traditional studio work with digital photography, video and installation. We’re also offering more all day courses - 9:00 to 4:00 in the studio - in response to student demand.
The fall season in our McClure Gallery begins with a duo venue exhibition, at the McClure as well as the Stewart Hall Art Gallery in Pointe Claire, featuring the works of Russell T. Gordon’s work, curated by Maurice Forget. Rick Leong shows his new work, entitled The Wilderness in October. There’s also an exciting three-person exhibition of works by Marc Dixon, Cécile Ronc and Sébastien Worsnip which explores three very unique approaches to landscape painting. See our gallery page for the full list of exhibitions.
Our doors are open all year round, mornings, afternoons, evenings, weekdays and weekends so we hope you’ll join us either in the studio or in the gallery this coming season.
