Our Fine and Applied Arts Department offers a full curriculum. Small classes guided by professional working artists provide the ideal setting for students to pursue their chosen medium -- drawing, painting, sculpture, and jewellery. Courses range from introductory to increasingly advanced level. As well, the Centre welcomes students who wish to develop their portfolios for advanced studies. Fine & applied art workshops offer students the opportunity to explore new media or innovative techniques in a collaborative and focused atmosphere.
The Visual Arts Centre started as the Potters’ Club over 60 years ago, and our ceramics tradition continues to thrive. Our Ceramics Department offers students a unique learning experience in our comfortably sized studios, equipped with fourteen ceramic wheels, five electric ceramic kilns, a laboratory for preparation of glazes and a full time ceramics technician. The department focuses on technical expertise -- mastering the wheel, use of glazes, etc. but also encourages students to explore the expanding boundaries of contemporary ceramic art.
The additional fee for materials covers: up to one box of clay, glazes and engobes, as well as firings and the use of open studios for extra practice.
We would like to thank the EJLB Foundation for their continuing generous support of our ceramics department.
For more than 30 years, the Youth Department has offered exciting hands-on learning in the arts. Our programme introduces children and teens to the dynamic and joyful process of creating. In our professional studio environment students learn such artistic fundamentals as drawing, painting, sculpture and printmaking; they also experiment with a wide range of art materials, techniques and processes. Working with an exceptional staff of instructors (all practicing artists) students create original artworks that give form to their ideas and feelings about themselves and the world around them. The sense of personal satisfaction they gain from self-expression helps to establish a positive and lasting experience in the world of art. Our Youth Department is also involved in community-based public art projects through our Outreach Programme.
You may register successively to each of our four semesters as new projects are introduced each term.
