Transfer techniques open up a world of creative possibilities for contemporary artists, allowing an image (ie. digital photo, drawing, text) to be integrated into any acrylic surface. Sun. Oct. 24; 9:30 - 4:30 Anne Ashton
Many painters are intrigued by the vast array of strangely shaped palette knives and brushes available, and wonder how they might enhance their personal painting style. This workshop allows you to explore the potential of each tool and discover the pleasure of unexpected marks and strokes. Both implements lend themselves to unique interpretations of the land - the brush, often a more familiar tool, will be put to new uses; a selection of palette knives will also be on hand for experimentation and use in your work. Oil, or acrylic. Some painting experience necessary.
Sun. Oct. 31; 9:30 am - 4:30 pm Karen Thomson
This workshop is designed for drawing and painting students who would like to discover the expressive qualities unique to mylar (matte acetate), a material used by many contemporary artists. This translucent, synthetic paper provides a receptive and sensual surface for oil or acrylic paint, pastel, charcoal, graphite and conté. Painting and drawing in a variety of these mediums, as well as the overlaying of multiple, transparent images will be investigated. Demonstration and practice session in the morning, model session in the afternoon. Prerequisite: two sessions of drawing or painting.
Sun. Nov. 14; 9:30 am - 4:30 pm
This is a rare opportunity to watch an artist at work, starting with palette set up, deciding where to begin and progressing through the length of a painting. Various paint applications will be demonstrated: blending, spatula, scraping-back, and laying on tones and values. Michael will work from life, taking the subject from the studio environment. The afternoon session offers the chance to experiment with these ideas and apply them to your own work in oil or acrylic. Prerequisite: two sessions of painting, or the equivalent.
Sun. Nov. 21 10:00 am - 4:00 pm Renée Lévesque
For artist Renée Levesque, the card is a work of art in its own right, a small format that lends itself to a playful, creative approach to personal imagery. Renee shares her smorgasbord of materials and techniques including a choice of faux-fini, paint, spackle, paste, rubber stamp, hot glue and wax, self-drying clay, gel and ink. Learn how to effectively combine these with found objects and small treasures, while conceiving and designing your own unique series of cards. For all levels.
Sun. Nov. 28; 10:00 am - 4:00 pm Melanie Matthews
A more advanced workshop in image transfer, introduces the concept of “Mix More Media”, a series of specialty products and techniques developed by Golden Paints (www.goldenpaints.com). With the use of these techniques, any relatively thin, flat material (plastic, metal, paper or canvas) becomes an inkjet printable surface, allowing the artist to freely merge imagery from completely divergent sources. Learn how your computer and home inkjet printer can assist your creative process.
Prerequisite: Introduction to Image Transfer or equivalent.

Sun. Feb. 20 9:30 am - 4:30 pm
A floral subject provides the stepping off point for this full-length demonstration in wet techniques, affording the rare opportunity to watch an artist at work. The demo will be followed by an afternoon work session, in which you will have the chance to experiment and incorporate a new approach into your own work. Prerequisite: one session of watercolour.
Sun. March 6; 9:30 am - 4:30 pm
An opportunity to watch artist Michael Merrill at work, the demo will concentrate on a large-scale monochrome work in ink, subject to be drawn from the immediate studio environment. Michael’s work aims to balance structure and space with the fluid, almost dream-like flow of wash. The afternoon session, with instruction, will focus on the studio, plants or still life subjects as you experiment with the techniques in your own work. (black watercolour or ink) Prerequisite: experience with ink or watercolour.

Sun. March 20; 9:30 am - 4:30 pm Anne Ashton
A deepening sense of colour can enhance your perception of nature and resonate in your own painting practice. This workshop explores various palettes with a focus on colour temperatures. In the morning, we will mix colours by cycling through the seasons, exploring winter’s rich darks and tinted whites, spring greens, the warm and cool blues of summer and varied hues of autumn. The afternoon will give us a chance to integrate these new colour possibilities into our own work. All painting media welcome (including watercolour); some painting experience necessary.
