Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain

Anyone can learn to draw using this straightforward approach based on the well-known book, Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain, by Betty Edwards. The course covers light and shade, contour and perspective, using pencil, charcoal, conté. An enjoyable first step in learning to draw.

Learn to Draw the Figure

(starts July 5)

This confidence-building approach to life drawing begins with the basics of contour, gesture, proportion and the underlying structure of the figure. You will work from live models every week, with step-by-step instruction and guidance. Pencil, charcoal, conté, ink and pastel will contribute to varied, expressive qualities of line, tonality and colour. Prerequisite: one session of drawing or the equivalent.

Introduction to Dry Pastel

Strengthen your drawing skills with a step-by-step introduction to pastel. Explore the rich possibilities of this traditional medium as you gradually develop your sense of colour and an understanding of colour relationships. Classes include guided exercises, critiques and study of master works in pastel. Subject matter: still life, nature subjects and the model. Prerequisite: one session of drawing.

Watercolour I

Get acquainted with your paints, paper and brushes in this introduction to the art of watercolour. Instruction will cover wash and glaze techniques, wet-on-wet, dry brush, and use of the white of the paper to establish luminosity. Learn the basics of colour mixing and composition while developing your expressive painting style. Weekly projects will include still life, landscape, abstraction and the model. For beginners.

Watercolour: Expressive Brushwork and Collage Techniques

A direct and spontaneous approach to working in Chinese ink, watercolour or acrylic wash. The integration of collage materials such as Japanese “washi” and other natural fibre papers will add textural qualities to an intuitive painting process. Results may vary from the realistic to the abstract, with value placed on the element of surprise and discovering the quality of “freshness” in individual work. Subjects will include live models, nature subjects, still life and abstraction. Some watercolour experience necessary.

Colour Theory I

The fundamentals of colour theory: value, hue, saturation and contrast are the daily working tools of the artist. Instruction and hands-on exercises will lead to deeper understanding of these core concepts. Once familiar with the basics, we will also explore the more poetic and expressive properties of colour and the notion of harmonizing colour within a work. Exercises can be carried out with a minimal palette of fast drying acrylic paint, but oil painters may switch to their own medium as the course progresses.

Introduction to Painting (oil or acrylic)

This course offers beginners a choice of oil or acrylic; basic tools and techniques will be covered for both. A creative approach to colour and composition will be encouraged. A variety of subjects including still life and landscape will be explored.

Impressionist Painting: An Exploration of Light and Colour

(starts July 6)

Inspired by examples of impressionism from Monet, Seurat, and Pissaro to Tom Thomson and the Group of Seven, this course explores the use of colour and brushstroke to create a vibrant quality of light. Students will gain an in-depth understanding of colour mixing and the properties and interactions of colours, and learn to apply the impressionist approach to their own personal work. Subjects include still life and landscape. Prerequisite: two sessions of painting

Sunday Painting Studio

Continue to develop your painting skills and techniques in a relaxed studio atmosphere. Working from still life, the live model, and personal images, students will deepen their understanding of composition, colour theory and paint application. Instruction includes individual guidance and instructor demonstrations. Prerequisite: two sessions of painting.

Jewellery Fundamentals

Mon. & Wed. 7:00 -10:00 pm Mélie Vézina-Methé
(starts July 5)

Unique and beautiful jewellery can be made using simple techniques. Beginners will be introduced to the basics of jewellery construction (sawing, filing, soldering) and encouraged to use these methods creatively to make brooches, earrings, pendants and rings in sterling silver and other materials. Materials may be purchased from the instructor. Students may complete several pieces during the session.

Wire and Bead Work

Tues. & Thurs. 7:00 - 10:00 pm Cynthia Hawkes
(starts July 6)

Combine sterling silver wire with beads of semi-precious stone, glass, or crystal to create earrings, necklaces, and chains. Wire wrapping and chain making will be taught in addition to the standard construction techniques (sawing, filing, soldering). Special emphasis will be given to finishing a piece with an attractive handmade clasp.

The Essential Sketchbook

Summer is the ideal time to begin the important artist’s practice of keeping a sketchbook. With directed instruction, we will work in studio from still-life and nature subjects, as well as outdoors from garden, park, street and café settings. Using coloured pencils, watercolour or pen and ink, we will fill sketchbooks with quick sketches, thumbnail drawings, colour and composition notes which may also serve as inspiration for future paintings in any medium. We will explore various types of sketchbooks and paper qualities. Outings, weather permitting. Prerequisite: one session of drawing, painting or watercolour.

Plants and Flowers in Watercolour

Taking inspiration from the beautiful gardens, greenhouses and cut flowers around us this summer, we will spend four enjoyable Sundays painting plants and flowers. Each week will focus on a different aspect of floral imagery and technique from brush handling, colour notes, plein air sketches and watercolour studies to observational representation and expressive interpretation. Outings, weather permitting. Prerequisite: one session of watercolour.

Intermediate Painting: Beyond the Basics

This course is a follow-up to level I painting and a further exploration of painting concerns: selection of subject, understanding how to choose and mix colour, composition and finishing of a work. The development of personal style and content will be encouraged; instruction includes demonstrations and individual guidance. Subjects include still life, live models and landscape. Prerequisite: one session of painting.
