If you’ve always wanted to draw, here’s an excellent way to begin. Work in a relaxed atmosphere as you develop the basic skills of observational drawing and discover the magic and pleasure of drawing what you see. The fundamentals of light and shade, line, form and composition will be introduced. Materials - fall: pencil, ink, charcoal, - winter: conté, pastel, pastel pencils. Subjects include still life and live models.

Designed for beginners, this course covers the materials and techniques of watercolour painting. Instruction will include washes, wet-on-wet and glazing, with an introduction to colour mixing, brushwork and composition. Demonstrations and individual guidance.

Continue exploring the elements of expressive watercolour painting. Some revision of the basics will serve as a starting point to discover further techniques including wash and line, use of transparent and opaque colours and dry brush. Weekly projects will cover a variety of subjects from nature studies, landscape, the model and abstract imagery. Prerequisite: Watercolour Basics or equivalent.

We will rediscover some of the essential elements of successful watercolour painting including effective colour choices, working with values and how to preserve vibrant whites. From these basics we will move on to more experimental techniques while developing personal imagery and style. Subjects include still life, natural objects and flowers, landscapes and abstraction. Pre-requisite: Watercolour II or the equivalent.
