This weekly workshop invites students to put aside pre-conceived rules, play with materials and experiment with new approaches. This second level course focuses on notions of composition, colour and design and how to use these skills to enrich your personal collage practice. Oil pastel offers a practical alternative to oil paint, with no drying time, no toxic product, and less clean up. The resulting work is vibrant in colour, luminosity, and textural possibilities. Developing the skills to master proportion and structure of the body is an ongoing process and focus of this course. The individual, expressive content of each student’s work will also be emphasized. The monotype print is a natural extension of drawing and painting, combining qualities of mark-making, transparent wash, colour layering and texture. Ink is applied to a plexiglas plate with a brush, brayer or rag, and the resulting, often surprising image, is transferred to paper with a printing press. An all-level course touching on the fundamentals of sumi-e brush painting, including the introduction of the Four Gentlemen of Japan - "shikunshi" - wild orchid, bamboo, plum, and chrysanthemum. Subjects include Japanese characters, flowers, fruit, birds etc. The essentials will be practiced in tones of black, but colour may be added according to individual preference.

The fundamentals of colour theory: value, hue, saturation and contrast are the daily working tools of the artist. Instruction and hands-on exercises will lead to deeper understanding of these core concepts. Once familiar with the basics, we will also explore the more poetic and expressive properties of colour and the notion of harmonizing colour within a work. Exercises can be carried out with a minimal palette of fast drying acrylic paint, but oil painters may switch to their own medium as the course progresses. Prerequisite: one session of painting.

Many visual artists have turned to a more conceptual type of hybrid or interdisciplinary practice, combing traditional studio work in drawing, painting, or sculpture, with digital photography, video, and installation art.
