The study of the human form has engaged artists for centuries. Even abstract expressionist painters are known to have studied the model diligently for years as a way of training their eye. Regardless of your medium or style, working from the live model offers a valuable discipline that strengthens and enriches your visual vocabulary.

This confidence-building approach to life drawing begins with the basics of contour, gesture, proportion and the underlying structure of the figure. You will work from live models every week, with step-by-step instruction and guidance. Pencil, charcoal, conté, ink and pastel will contribute to varied, expressive qualities of line, tonality and colour. Prerequisite: one session of drawing.

Developing the skills to master proportion and structure of the body is an ongoing process and focus of this course. The individual, expressive content of each student’s work will also be emphasized. Studies will include quick gesture drawings and longer, more finished works with a focus on composition, lighting and mood. Materials will include charcoal, pastel, graphite and ink. Prerequisite: one session of figure drawing or the equivalent.

A course designed in consideration of the student as artist, desiring to further their ease and skill in drawing, while also imbuing figure works with a personal response. Learn to use the model as a vehicle for your own message and emotion, through your choice of colour, environment and pose. Drawing materials include charcoal, pastel and a few acrylic colours. Clothed and nude models. Prerequisite: two sessions of Figure Drawing.

An introduction to the art of portraiture, for students with some basic drawing experience. Face and head studies will help students develop skill in realistic drawing. Expressive and imaginative approaches to the portrait will also be explored. Pencil, charcoal and ink will be used. Live models. Prerequisite: one session of drawing.
Mon 6:30 - 9:30 pm Maria Doering
(12 wks; fall: starts Sept. 20; winter: starts Jan. 17)
This portrait course begins with the basics of form and structure using black and white charcoal, gradually introducing a limited palette and coloured pastel papers. A full-colour portrait in pastel will be the goal, with emphasis on developing an expressive skin-tone palette and capturing the essence of personality. Live models at every session. Prerequisite: one session of portrait drawing.
